A Hummingbird Moth

We were all outside preparing the motor home for a camping trip this weekend and I looked over to the butterfly bush to see a hummingbird moth. It was amazing! I didn't have the camera but my son ran in to get it and took some pictures. It was moving so fast, especially it's wings, that it was hard to get good focus, but this was the best of the pictures.

What we saw was a Hummingbird Clearwing (Hemaris thysbe). Last year I had a different type of hummingbird moth visit that was much larger. It's amazing how brave they are-- all five of us were standing next to the butterfly bush ooohing and ahhhing, and it wasn't even phased. It darted around to each of the blooms and when it was done it darted off towards the pasture.

I always love a little excitement in the garden!

wow, I never knew they exist, I've been trying all week to get a good shot of the hummingbirds that feed in front of my bedroom window. Not an easy task!

That is new to me too. I have never seen one. Thank goodness for those who grab thier cameras so the rest of us get an education. Thanks. : )

Thanks ladies-- I've seen it three more times since this post, and it was always on the butterfly bush! I had one last year too, but it was much larger and I didn't have my camera with me that time.

It is so totally cool to see them still and see the see through part of their wings or to photograph the shadows of those wings - they are very, very cool

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for stopping by my little bit of blogspace. I accidentally rejected you comment because it was posted twice, when I rejected the duplicate, the original went with it... I'm so sorry! :-(

Anyway, back to the commenting...
My daughter just LOVES hummingbird moths and yes they are surprisingly brave aren't they? She's always trying to get them to sit on her finger but they're usually too busy sipping nectar to bother with her. She's managed to capture some amazing pictures too. Perhaps that's an idea for a post today because I'm kinda low on inspiration.
