Little Signs of Spring

The daffodils are popping up, though there
are no buds,I'm excited none the less. Our
pathetic grouping of three last minute tulips
from 2007 have grown into 6 or 8 and are also
popping out of the ground. The lemon thyme
is starting to show green as well. The maple
tree has buds, and I'm seeing bits of green
in the lawn.

Many of our wildlife visitors are back. The
robins are busy and I saw the pair of Sandhill
Cranes last week, as well as heard them. They
have a unique "call", which can be heard from
quite a distance. The deer are wandering into
the hayfield again near a small wooded area on
our property. We don't see them during most of
the winter, so that sighting is also a sign of
spring.

Our resident woodchuck has also become active.
He has made a hole/tunnel smack dab in the
middle of the hayfield. There is no cover at
all, and he is so chubby that you can easily
see him running around in the field on sunny
days. We should name him. He hasn't bothered
the garden areas,so I'm not feeling hostile
towards him. The only "visitors" that truly
bring out a violent streak in me are the
Japanese beetles, but I have plenty of time
to work on a plan of attack before they show
up.

I'm itching to get outside and do something;
anything. I may do some outside cleaning this
weekend. It's amazing to me how much I look
forward to garden chores, but housekeeping
never seems to call my name. Hmm...
